House Passes SAVE Act to Require Proof of Citizenship for Voters in Federal Elections

Representative Perez said, “I do not support noncitizens voting in American elections.”

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act passed in the House of Representatives on Thursday. The legislation would amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to require documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration in federal elections.

The act would mandate states not to “accept and process an application to register to vote in an election for Federal office unless the applicant presents documentary proof of United States citizenship.” The documentation would include REAL ID-compliant identification, military IDs, passports, certified birth certificates, or other naturalization documents. States would also have to “take affirmative steps on an ongoing basis to ensure that only United States citizens are registered to vote.”

The SAVE Act is expected to face a filibuster in the Senate and is unlikely to receive 60 or more votes.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of Congress as they seek to ensure only U.S. citizens vote in federal elections.
  • For senators as they consider the SAVE Act and its documentation provisions.
